Federalists: People whose opinion were closest to those of Alexander Hamilton. They were willing to stretch the Constitution via interpretation. The supported strong central government. Federalists did not believe a state could overrule the federal government. (rich)

Democrat - Republicans: People whose views were closest to Thomas Jefferson. They felt the words of the Constitution should be followed to the letter. They supported the concept of federalism and were proponents of states rights. Democrat - Republicans believed a state could overrule the federal government. (poor)
